The last six months have been quite good for Rory McIlroy. Not only did he win his third FedEx Cup last August, but he became the face of the PGA Tour’s fight against the new LIV Golf league.

Since 2017, Rory has played with TaylorMade clubs, and his latest bag for 2023 lies heavily on contributions from the company.

With an exception for his Titleist Vokey wedges, McIlroy utilizes the new Stealth 2 woods, P-series irons, and a Spider putter.

In this Rory McIlroy WITB, we’ll take a deeper look into his golf bag, the clubs he plays, and why his relationship with TaylorMade has been fruitful for the four-time major winner.

Rory just switched to the new Stealth 2 Plus at the Genesis Invitational after watching his playing partners (Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas) outdrive him over the tournament’s first day.

For a player who prides himself on hitting the golf ball further than just about anyone on the PGA Tour, the Stealth 2 Plus driver offers the ability to let it rip without worrying about hitting wayward drives.

The Stealth 2 Plus, featuring a sliding weight behind the Speed Pocket, also comes equipped with the Twist Face technology, helping highly skilled players maintain their target line on strikes that leak toward the toe.

For Rory, the customization and advanced technology of the Stealth 2 Plus caused him to ditch his original Stealth plus driver for the foreseeable future.

McIlroy uses the new Stealth 2 Plus fairway wood in 15 and 19 degrees. Taking the place of a 3-wood and 5-wood in his bag, the Stealth 2 Plus offers an exciting innovation, a 50-gram weight that rests along the sole of the club head.

Golfers can adjust the weight to shift the CG, helping them dial the optimal shot height from the fairway or the tee box. The Stealth 2 Plus fairway also comes with an adjustable loft sleeve, allowing players to increase or decrease loft.

For Rory, the 3-wood can easily reach 300 yards off the tee, helping him find the fairway when faced with a tight landing area.

Offering a low profile with a hearty slice of forgiveness, the Stealth 2 Plus fairway offers Rory an absolute weapon when attacking long shots on the course.

Rory plays with his specialized, unique set of irons from TaylorMade on the PGA Tour. Created to fit his specifications, the Rors prototype irons are not available to consumers, but an iron set by TaylorMade offers remarkably similar features.

If you are looking for a similar model to the blades that Rory plays, TaylorMade makes the P-7MB irons. With tour-shaping and a muscle-back design, the P-7MB irons deliver low launch with mid-level spin.

Made for advanced players, the TaylorMade P-7MB irons provide total control over shotmaking. While they don’t offer much forgiveness for golfers like Rory, the P-7MB allows McIlroy to work the ball from side to side with absolute precision.

WEDGE

Despite his long-term relationship with TaylorMade, Rory uses the popular Titleist Vokey Design SM9 wedges for his short game. A favorite of all the top players on tour, including Tiger Woods, the Vokey SM9 delivers high spin from anywhere on the course.

From the fairway, the SM9 offers clean turf interaction and flight, creating a steep landing angle that allows amateurs and professionals to hunt the pin from within 125 yards.

Around the green, the Vokey SM9 wedges can navigate heavy rough and sand with little problem, making them necessary when playing challenging PGA Tour-level courses for McIlroy.

Along the face, Titleist gave the Vokey SM9 deep grooves to create the friction to start spinning quickly after impact.

PUTTER

On the putting surface, Rory uses TaylorMade’s famous Spider Hydro X Blast mallet putter.

Featuring a broad alignment guide on the top of the putter’s head, Rory loves playing with this putter because he feels the club offers a steady stroke that keeps his golf ball along the intended line with minimal skipping or bouncing after impact.

Along the face, golfers love the TPU Pure Roll insert. Encouraging true roll off the face, the insert provides golfers using the Spider X Hydro Blast putter with exceptional distance control on long putts.

Rory also loves the mallet’s weight as it provides enough heft to minimize twisting during the stroke.

GOLF BALLS

TaylorMade recently redesigned the TP5x for pros like Rory, creating a Tour Flight Dimple Pattern that maximizes carry distance with a low penetrating flight.

With a five-layer design, the TP5x offers softness around the greens without sacrificing a yard of distance from the tee box.

From inside 150 yards, the TP5x creates a controllable flight with a steep landing angle that stops cold on the greens for McIlroy.

Once Rory gets close to the cup, the three thin layers around the core increase groove interaction to generate spin quickly, helping with feel and responsiveness.

Delivering tour-level ball speed with a high launch, the TaylorMade TP5x keeps driver spin low, wedge spin high, and great feel.

The grip also delivers total control in weather as the brushed cotton cord wicks moisture from the surface of the rubber to improve stability and prevent slipping.

A dynamic grip for golfers like Rory that want total control of their shotmaking, the Golf Pride MCC Swing grip removes tension from the hands because golfers can rest assured the club won’t slip or slide from their hands.
